House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) torched Democrats for shirking their responsibility to represent the people of their districts by sidestepping their No. 1 job via mass proxy-voting.
The primary job of congressmen and women is to vote on laws in Congress. That’s how they represent the interests and the voices of their constituents from their hometown districts. This requires them to be in Washington, as outlined in the U.S. Constitution.
Instead, the Democrats recently adopted a new “proxy voting rule” to enable them to stay home and allow other representatives to vote for them.
Republicans, led by Kevin McCarthy, are suing Speaker Nancy Pelosi to block this, calling the stunt unconstitutional and a gross dereliction of duty.

In an impassioned speech on the House floor, McCarthy pointed out that “the Constitution requires in-person assembly. You can’t make unconstitutional rules.”
McCarthy also underscored that the U.S. Congress has never let other crises stop them from doing their jobs (which is to represent their constituents by voting on laws). Congressmen are not supposed to sit at home and collect taxpayer-funded paychecks while doing nothing.
“For 231 years, never have we seen a proxy vote on the floor of the House,” McCarthy said. “We look at the history of America through the Yellow Fever of 1793, the Civil War, the burning of this Capitol during the War of 1812, the Spanish Flu of 1918, and even 9/11. Congress has never flinched from its Constitutional duty to uphold and assemble inside this body.”
Seventy-one Democrats in the House voted via proxy voting. Zero Republicans did.

McCarthy explained: “Even one proxy vote dilutes the voting power of a member. The people lend their power and voices to members of Congress via Congressmen and Congresswoman. You are going to have people voting on this floor, voting for five members from five different states.”
In California alone — your largest delegation — more than half of the Democrats stayed home. I guarantee you they cash their paychecks this month.
That means 19 million people in California will not have their voices heard. Maybe somebody from Connecticut will vote for them.
More than 70 Democrat members will vote by proxy. That’s 49 million Americans who did not count because you gave it to somebody else.”
McCarthy also noted on Twitter that “a Democrat from Maryland just voted seven times on legislation in Congress. This is NOT what the Founders had in mind when they created representative democracy. One representative should equal one vote.”

Republican Congressman Dan Bishop noted that 71 Democrats voted by proxy for the first time since adopting this dubious proxy voting rule. He called it “an unprecedented corruption of the Congressional process.”
Bishop, who’s from North Carolina, underscored that he’s in Washington in person to do the job that taxpayers are paying him to do instead of sitting at home.
“I’m here in Washington meeting my responsibility,” Congressman Bishop tweeted. “Sunny weather. Perfectly safe for most. Just a touch of courage required.”

After Bishop tweeted that “one member just cast 5 votes besides his own,” Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton replied: “Outrageous! This is a constitutional abomination.”

A retired Marine tweeted his disgust over the Democrats’ latest stunt (whose goal is to push for mail-in voting for the November election to steal it from President Trump).
Mail-in voting is a process with a well-documented history of fraud and abuse.
Marine Tim Lee tweeted: “I’m in a wheelchair because I gave both of my legs to America. I will gladly set for hours in line to vote. Even 6’ apart and wear a mask. There are no excuses. Mass voting at home invites massive fraud. You know that though.”

One Twitter user told Democrats: “GET YOUR *SSES TO WASHINGTON. DO YOUR DAMN JOB.”
He remarked: “Millions aren’t *allowed* to work right now, and you 71 just sit at home on taxpayer-funded “vacation?” HELL. NO.”
(Citizens of America: Contact your reps now and tell them to GET TO WORK.)

DO YOUR DAMN JOB.

Kevin McCarthy spotlighted the craven hypocrisy of several Democrats, who claimed they couldn’t go to Washington to do their jobs because of the coronavirus crisis.
Yet somehow, that didn’t stop them from traveling to Florida yesterday to attend the SpaceX/NASA rocket launch. The launch was aborted at the last minute due to inclement weather.
Democrat Charlie Crist said he couldn’t show up for work in Washington today “due to the ongoing public health emergency.”

Another Democrat caught claiming he couldn’t come to DC to vote “due to the ongoing public health emergency.” But he was OK to attend a rocket launch.
